Overview

This programme explores the key concepts integral to the area of addiction studies, giving the learner an understanding of its complexity grounded in theory-based research. It also identifies new and emerging issues in the field of addiction.

An August 2020 IACP (Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) report found that members reported a 23% increase in clients presenting with addiction/substance misuse issues since the onset of the pandemic.

On successful completion of the programme, learners will be able to:

  • critically analyse theories of addiction

  • explain and discriminate between different signs and symptoms of substance misuse.

  • critically reflect on ethical responsibilities to clients, family members, agency and other professionals.

  • evaluate various processes of interventions in response to people with substance misuse issues.

  • critically evaluate national alcohol and drug policies and locate them within the context of international policy developments.

  • analyse the impact of addiction on the families and communities of substance users.

This programme is a module from our MA in Child, Youth and Family Studies and offered as a standalone certificate for students who are interested in gaining a recognised qualification in this discipline.
