What is this Programme about?

This programme is designed for those who are keen to develop and consolidate their business and management skills through lectures, discussion and analysis of key management concepts across the broad spectrum of business in the emergency services sector. The programme aims to help students progress to a standard of understanding and analytical thinking that enables them to advance in their careers and to Master’s Level should they wish to do so.

This BBS Management programme will provide individuals with an in-depth understanding of the theories, concepts and methods relating to the field of emergency services management and will provide students with the basis and grounding in theory and practical application to in time take on supervisory and management roles in the emergency services sector.

This Honours Degree programme offers specialist modules such as:

  • Fire Safety Science
  • Incident Command & Risk Management in the Operational Environment 
  • Buildings Controls Regulatory Systems
  • Critical Incident Stress Management

While also offering traditional business skills of:

Who is this Programme for?

This programme is relevant to anyone currently working in the Emergency Services sector wishing to acquire the relevant management and business skills to advance their careers. Previous graduates include fire officers, ambulance dispatch operatives, retained fire fighters, training and logistics officers, assistant chief fire officers, safety officers.

This programme has a strong student representation nationally with attending cohorts from Galway, Clare and throughout the Southern and Eastern Regions for example Antrim, Carlow, Cavan, Cork, Donegal, Dublin, Kildare, Laois, Limerick, Louth, Mayo, Meath, Roscommon, Tipperary, Waterford and Westmeath.

Course Delivery

Classes are delivered using a hybrid approach involving a combination of pre-course reading, pre-recorded classes, live and onsite classes.  

Online Support

Students will have full access to a range of supports available online and through Blackboard, our virtual learning environment. These include our new online programme, PACE, which is designed to support students to access and effectively use library resources in order to complete assignments. Additional supports include an Academic Writing Centre and Maths Support Centre, freely available to all students.

Entry Requirements

Under 23

Applicants will be admitted to this course on the basis of their results in the Leaving Certificate. Minimum entry requirements are Grade C3 or higher in two Higher level subjects and Grade A to D in four Ordinary Level Leaving Certificate subjects to include English and Mathematics.

Over 23

This programme will benefit those working in the Emergency Services sector, however applications are also welcomed from those who do not have this experience but who would like to work in the sector.

There is no defined entry criteria for over 23’s however, applicants may be asked to provide additional information and/or may be called for interview as part of the application process.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

All programmes are mapped to the SETU Carlow Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy and applicants who wish to apply using this route can request the specific RPL for this programme.

SETU Carlow’s RPL Policy offers clear pathways to the learner for recognition of previous learning undertaken and offer every credit to the learner in completing such learning.

The Programme Board will be responsible for the assessment of entry standards and applications as part of any RPL Process.
